A Comedy of Tragic Proportions
by Scott Lynch-Giddings
Loosely based on the epic poem “Argonautika” by Apollonius of Rhodes,
Argonuttica recounts the
ancient myth of Jason and the Argonauts—
a crew of heroes including the likes of Orpheus, Castor, Pollux,
and Hercules himself—
who sailed the Aegean Sea on a daring quest for the Golden
Fleece.
Yet, while the story comes from the canon of classical Greek
literature, this is
no staid poetry reading.
Instead, it’s a wild comedy with a cast of nearly 40 characters,
ranging from a half-man/half-horse centaur to a hot-tempered but
insecure bronze giant.
Combined with a little music, a slideshow, and a ten-foot snake
puppet,
Argonuttica is that all-too-rare commodity for
any high school or community group:
a fast-paced, unpredictable, and genuinely hilarious show!
